Hepatorenal Syndrome

Hepatorenal Disorders, are renal complications occurring in patients with severe liver failure (e.g. cirrhosis). Hepatorenal Syndrome (HRS) belongs to this disease group and is a medical condition with a high mortality, with up to 50% of patients dying within the first month. The main feature is an abrupt kidney insufficiency which is refractory to conventional treatment. There is no specific, effective treatment available for this condition.

In patients with advanced liver disease, HRS is a diagnosis with ominous implications. Usually, these patients have advanced liver disease but no previous history of renal disease. It is believed that HRS is a functional disease due to insufficient kidney blood flow. In fact, kidneys from diseased patient with HRS have been successfully transplanted.

There is significant medical evidence that this functional kidney failure is secondary to intense renal vasoconstriction. Restoring adequate kidney blood flow may be of potential benefit to these patients. N-003 may represent such a potential medical breakthrough.
